As a hypoglycaemic I often replace the sugar in my diet with sweeteners. I was interested to hear, on a program that I watched last night, that sweeteners can cause problems with eating. They reported that if you have sweetener in a fizzy drink or sugar free sweets then it can make you eat more. This is because when the body tastes something sweet it expects there to be an energy boost which sugar would give you, however sweetener does not and so your body will be looking for that energy by way of searching for other food.
It does explain why when I have a sugar free chocolate bar in the morning I seem to want to eat more straight afterwards. It has got me thinking about my sweetener use and I think that using it in food is probably okay because there is energy in it elsewhere but maybe having sweets, chocolate and drinks with it in should be avoided if I want to control what I am eating more easily.
